“A winner in just about every way” is how critics described “Angel and the Badman,” the first film (1947) ever produced by award-winning U.S. actor John Wayne. This characterization of a career milestone for Wayne also best describes the exciting milestone recently reached by Angel and the Badman II.

The newest Angel, a 48-foot, semi-custom, flybridge, sportfishing yacht, is the defending first place overall champion of the 2007 Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin tournament named after its team captured an almost 700 lb. marlin and nearly $1 million prize. Described as the “Super Bowl” of sportfishing competitions (Sports Illustrated), Bisbee’s hosts thousands of anglers and enthusiasts each October in Cabo San Lucas for “the world’s richest marlin fishing tournament.”

While earning recognition as one of the youngest captains to win the Bisbee’s Black & Blue tournament, forty-year young Alex Edwards and his award-winning crew including boat owner Richard Mott, a former medical device company CEO, is often asked to share tips on how a rookie could win such a major billfishing competition. Edwards, who is as equally proud of the golf championship he and Mott also captured, shares that the titles prove that participants can win tournaments even while having a good time. “We are a team who loves to fish; so we view sportfishing tournaments as just that - a sport and not a make-or-break business deal. It is really a privilege for us to be out there with hundreds of guys and Angels [girls] who enjoy fishing at all kinds of levels. We go out there prepared with a good boat, a good supply of equipment and materials, and an attitude of good sportsmanship. I believe that the attitude gives the winning edge. . . and of course, a little bit of luck doesn’t hurt either.”

According to a recent report published by the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), there are more people who test their luck by fishing for sport in the United States than the total population of California. Among those 38 million fishermen is an exciting and emerging team of California “sea cowboys” who are proving that you can enjoy the sport of fishing and still win.
